If you are typical of the population, then last week you had some time off around the holidays to play with your mobile phone. And what do people do with their mobile phones when they have a bit of time to play with them? They download apps, they find new games to put on their Smartphone device. Were you one of them?
Chances are, you were. Residents from the UK alone were responsible for the download of 81 million apps since Christmas. That’s only a little over one week. When you combine the UK downloads with the rest of the world, then the data suggests that over one billion apps were discovered and used after Christmas.
The week before Christmas proved to be impressive for downloads, but not as significantly as after. Why? People may have received gift cards on Christmas that they used after if they were downloading apps that cost money. The gift cards covered the expense and people don’t want to sit on gift card money, so that is why there was the surge in apps post-Christmas.
Even though the UK figures were impressive, take a look at the rest of the world. The US is responsible for about half of that billion apps download, with 509 million and China has 99 million. So our 81 million seems a little small in comparison with the big picture, but it is a huge leap from last year. China isn’t a country where Christmas is widely celebrated, so why did they have the jump? Population. It’s simply in their numbers.
The increase in apps downloaded could also be because of all the new phones being received as gifts. Approximately 27 million Apple and Droid mobile phones were activated between Christmas and the New Year. That’s a lot of new phones that require apps to get them going…
